【摘要】:Thistestmethodisusefulasarapid,nondestructivetechniqueforthecalculationofthein-placewatermassperunitvolumeofsoilandrockatdesireddepthsbelowthesurface.Thistestmethodisusefulforinformationalandresearchpurposes.ItshouldonlybeusedforqualitycontrolandacceptancetestingwhencorrelatedtoactualwatermassperunitvolumeusingproceduresandmethodsdescribedinA1.2.3.Thenon-destructivenatureofthistestmethodallowsrepetitivemeasurementstobemadeatasingletestlocationforstatisticalanalysisandtomonitorchangesovertime.ThefundamentalassumptionsinherentinthistestmethodarethatthematerialundertestishomogeneousandhydrogenpresentisintheformofwaterasdefinedbyTestMethodD2216.Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythisstandardtestmethodisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection,andthelike.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodcoversthecalculationofthewatermassperunitvolumeofsoilandrockbythermalizationorslowingoffastneutronswheretheneutronsourceandthethermalneutrondetectorareplacedatthedesireddepthintheboredholelinedbyanaccesstube(seeNote3).1.1.1ForlimitationsseeSection6onInterferences.1.2Thewatermassperunitvolume,expressedasmassperunitvolumeofthematerialundertest,iscalculatedbycomparingthethermalneutroncountratewithpreviouslyestablishedcalibrationdata(seeAnnexA1).1.3Aprecisionstatementhasnotbeendevelopedforthisstandardatthistime.Therefore,thisstandardshouldnotbeusedforacceptanceorrejectionofamaterialforpurchasingpurposesunlesscorrelatedtootheracceptedASTMmethods.1.4ThevaluesexpressedinSIunitsareregardedasthestandard.Theinch-poundunitsgiveninparenthesesmaybeapproximateandareprovidedforinformationonly.1.5AllobservedandcalculatedvaluesshallconformtotheguideforsignificantdigitsandroundingestablishedinPracticeD6026.1.5.1Theproceduresusedtospecifyhowdataarecollected,recorded,andcalculatedinthisstandardareregardedastheindustrystandard.Inaddition,theyarerepresentativeofthesignificantdigitsthatshouldgenerallyberetained.Theproceduresuseddonotconsidermaterialvariation,purposeforobtainingthedata,specialpurposestudies,oranyconsiderationsfortheuserx2019;sobjectives;anditiscommonpracticetoincreaseorreducesignificantdigitsofreporteddatatobecommensuratewiththeseconsiderations.Itisbeyondthescopeofthisstandardtoconsidersignificantdigitsusedinanalysismethodsforengineeringdesign.1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.SpecifichazardsaregiveninSection8.
